‘Florance’ is a new screendance work for four dancers, one actor and a string quartet. It is presented as an installation with portions of the sets and costume featured in the film. Florance tells a fantastical story about the dominance of nature through the eyes of an art historian specializing in gardens, who’s also caring for an ailing mother. Set primarily in a nature preserve bordering her home, she discovers a relationship between repetition and individuality through the photography and the myth of Vertumnus and Virgil’s Georgics.
Performed by Angie Smalis, Rachel Sheil, Colin Gee and Colin Dunne
“Moloney” is a video installation of a script-based dance work about Margaret Moloney (1868-1952) developed by Angie Smalis and Colin Gee, composition by Erin Gee, that was premiered at “What Next Dance Festival” in Limerick, Ireland.
From Co. Limerick, Moloney was Glin’s final harbour master and the only known woman in that role. In this work, “Barbara” (Angie Smalis) considers Ms. Moloney as a woman in a position of power, managing the flow of maritime traffic. In considering the flow of the water, and the flow of men’s interests, she considers how practical things are learned from nature and history, in particular, how to navigate, and negotiate, between people.
